Roguelock: A LitRPG Adventure (The Wayfarers Book 1)

Book 1 of The Wayfarers, a series of LitRPG novellas.

The year is 1984, and Alex McLeod's dad has been missing for more than half his life. When Alex inherits a mysterious game called Wayfarer-- a game that should not exist-- he is drawn into a fantasy world of criminal intrigue. Accompanied by a disembodied daemon and an elf who is not all she seems, Alex must chase his father's legacy while finding a way to earn gold and experience points without getting himself killed in the process.

Roguelock is inspired by old-school tabletop roleplaying games and heist movies.

My Opinion: 70 pages, $0.99, Available on Kindle Unlimited

This short story the start this a 1980’s nostalgia story that turns into a transported to a game world RPG heist story. The game mechanics are based on custom D&D rules but after the initial info dump and character creation, they fade into the background and only really show up for fights and save throws.

I actually liked the 1980s storyline a lot more than the fantasy one. It felt like there was a chance the story was going to use RPG rules in that normal world, like the MC was going make a saving roll to get the hot girl or something. Instead, it turned into a more standard RPG fantasy story. Not bad, but not particularly innovative either. I’ll give the 2nd short story a chance and hope for something better.

Score: 7.1 out of 10
